OF DOCTOR ZAMENHOF’S LETTER.
In the first years of the existence of Esperanto a gentleman showed me a German book (a translation of a work of Charles Dickens) saying “this certainly cannot be translated into Esperanto.” To convince this gentleman that he erred I took the book and translated it.
Because the book not only was not translated from the original, but I even did not compare it with the original, therefore for a long time I did not wish to republish it. But several friends finding that to many esperantists it might possibly be interesting to read a book which had appeard in the early years of Esperanto, I yielded therefore to their wish and gave my consent for the re-issue of the work.
